The Hubertus Wald Tumour Centre is part of the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf and the Clinic of Pediatric Haematology and Oncology is one of the largest clinics of its kind in Germany and in Europe.

Hubertus Wald Tumour Centre
Prof Reinhard Schleppenheim - professional profile
There are tumours, including neuroblastoma, treated with such high doses of chemotherapy that hematopoiesis must be restored using the patient’s own previously frozen blood stem cells. Complementary immunotherapies for these diseases are being researched.
Paediatric Treatments
Prof Reinhard Schneppenheim
All patients are treated according to the certified guidelines of the German Society for Paediatric Oncology and Hematology (GPOH). The institute also chairs multicenter clinical studies for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (CoALL) and brain tumours in childhood (HIT 2000, CPT-SIOP 2000).
These focus on signal transduction in leukemia, DNA repair mechanisms, metastatic processes in bone tumours, the biology and treatment of neuroblastoma and the molecular biology of brain tumours such as medulloblastoma, ependymoma, CNS PNET, and rhabdoid tumours (ATRT).
Paediatric haematology and oncology
Paediatric stem cell transplantation
Haploidentical stem cell treatment
Thanks to reduced intensity of chemotherapy and better concurrent medication, the risk of the procedure has been decreasing for years. Treatable diseases of childhood and adolescence include:
Cooperation with the metabolic specialists of the paediatric clinic and the neuropaediatricians is a primary focus of the transplantation programme, led by PD Dr. Ingo Müller.
Conditions treated by paediatric stem cell transplant
Hamburg, Germany
Treatment include leukemia, brain tumours, bone tumours and embryonic tumours. The clinic is Germany’s largest treatment centre for haematologic disorders such as thalassemia and sickle cell anaemia.

Paediatric stem cell transplantation
Prof Ingo Mueller
The stem cell transplantation programme is one of the largest in Europe. In 2010 Hubertus Wald Tumour Centre transplants were performed on more than 30 children, with specialised pediatricians and pediatric nurses attending to their particular needs.
Bone marrow or haematopoietic stem cell transplantation has been performed in children and adolescents for 40 years. This treatment primarily helps many children with high-risk leukemia. In addition bone marrow can be replaced in response to various forms of bone marrow failure.
The clinic participates in an interdisciplinary stem cell transplantation program for the treatment of malignant diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and solid tumours, including brain tumours, and benign haematological disorders like immunodeficiencies and congenital metabolic diseases.
Finally, there are severe autoimmune diseases that do not respond to conventional therapy. In these cases, a combination of immunotherapy and chemotherapy can be successful, wiping out the overreacting immune system and resetting it to its state prior to onset of the autoimmune disease using the patient’s own stem cells. These autoimmune diseases may include systemic scleroderma, Still’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Conditions treated
The clinic is known for its expertise in immunodeficiency, childhood stroke and in coagulation disorders such as von Willebrand disease, haemophilia and thrombophilia.
Prof. Reinhard Schneppenheim
Scientific programmes
The institute is at the forefront of research of haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare immunodeficiency occurring in early childhood. It chairs a comprehensive European project studying HLH, funded by the EU and with partners from several European countries.
The clinic is also internationally known for its scientific and clinical expertise in the study of von Willebrand disease. The laboratory offers a broad range of molecular genetic tests for the most prevalent hematologic diseases, such as haemorrhage and thrombophilia, as well as for tumour predisposition syndromes.
The centre has much experience with transplantation treatment of the rare immunodeficiency haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.
Prof. Ingo Müller
Stem cell transplantations increasingly inspire innovative cellular and immunotherapeutic approaches to combating malignant cells. Stem cell transplantation is no longer limited to the treatment of diseases of the hematopoietic system in children and is also used to fight other congenital metabolic diseases.
Acute myeloid leukemia
Chronic myeloid leukemia
Myelodysplastic syndrome
Thalassemia
Sickle cell anaemia
Metachromatic leukodystrophy
Mucopolysaccharidoses
Adrenoleukodystrophy
Severe combined immundeficiency
Another focus concerns the transfer of stem cells from one parent to the child. In the diseases listed above the transplanted stem cells usually come from a healthy sibling or unrelated donor. Where no donor is found who matches the recipient’s tissue requirements, a haploidentical stem cell transplantation may be perfomed, for which the father or mother of the child serves as the donor.
Additional treatments
About 1,000 pediatric outpatients, both children and adolescents are treated every year.and it employs 20 doctors, 23 nurses and a dedicated psychosocial team.
